Remember him? Mystikal exploded onto the scene in the early 00’s with such memorable hits as “Danger (Been So Long)” and, of course, who could forget the Neptunes-produced hit “Shake Ya Ass”. Well, Mystikal is back with a new song “Hit Me” and Pitchfork approves:
Over a prancing bassline, rattling drums and call-and-response horn stabs, he reanimates the spirit of James Brown, rapping, talking, zinging, and mocking across a livewire three-plus minutes. It ends with him and his sashaying backup singers chanting, “Say it proud/ I’m black and loud.” As vital it ever was.
Pulp co-signs that.
